SCCA World Challenge to start by points; local 15-year-old fast in IMSA GT3
TOOELE VALLEY, UTAH (April 29, 2011) — A unseasonal snow storm put an early halt to the on-track action for the Larry H. Miller Dealerships Utah Grand Prix at Miller Motorsports Park on Friday.
Qualifying for the SCCA Pro Racing Pirelli World Challenge Championships was cancelled, causing the 50-car grid for Saturday’s race to be set by SCCA Pro Racing Regulations. The rules set the grid by Drivers’ Points in each class; drivers who have not scored points in the first three rounds of the season are gridded based on combined practice times after those who have scored points.
James Sofronas will start on the GT and overall pole in the No. 14 GMG Porsche 911 GT3. Sofronas is second in points behind Patrick Long, who is not at Miller Motorsports Park due to scheduling conflicts. Paul Brown is the GTS polesitter in the No. 50 Lucas Oil/K&N Filters Ford Mustang Boss 302S. Lawson Aschenbach takes the honor in Touring Car as that class’s championship leader in the No. 71 Compass360 Racing Honda Civic Si.
In the first of two scheduled practice sessions for the SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Championship, defending race winner Tony Ave toped the speed chart with a 1:49.016 (100.653 mph) in the No. 4 Lamers Racing/McMahon Group/Optech/PME Engines Chevrolet Corvette. Series rookie Carlos de Quesada was second fastest in the No. 22 Allegra Motorsports/Vitalz Jaguar XKR with a 1:49.737 (99.991 mph). De Quesada is a former Rolex 24 At Daytona class winner and looks to capture his first Trans-Am Series podium finish this weekend. The Trans-Am teams will qualify on Saturday morning for their scheduled race on Sunday.
In the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama, qualifying was snowed out and the grid set by the combined best times from the series’ two practice sessions. Tim McKenzie will start from pole in his No. 92 Kelly Moss Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, ahead of Brian Wong (No. 23 Alex Job Racing) and Henrique Cisneros (No. 26 NGT Motorsports). Melanie Snow of Pleasant Grove will start ninth overall. In the Gold Class, Snow’s 15-year-old son Madison set the fastest time of the day and will start from the class pole in 21st overall.
Saturday’s schedule includes the first of two races for the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge at 12:30 p.m., followed by the SCCA Pro Racing Pirelli World Challenge Championships race at 2:35 p.m. and the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at 4:30 p.m.
There are many fun off-track activities for fans to enjoy, including MMP’s brand-new Zip Line, karting at the Miller Kart Center, off-road Jeep rides and on-track Mustang rides. The paddock is also open to fans, allowing up-close-and-personal access to all the teams and drivers.
Tickets are priced at $25 for Saturday and $10 for Sunday. A two-day ticket is priced at $30. Kids aged 12 and under are admitted free of charge.
