Second straight win due to the misfortune of others
TOOELE VALLEY, UTAH (April 30, 2011) — Greg Pursley picked up his second straight win at Miller Motorsports Park in Saturday’s crash-filled Larry H. Miller Dealerships Utah Grand Prix in similar good-luck fashion as his win in 2010.
Pursley, driving the No. 26 Gene Price Motorsports Ford, held off a furious charge by Moses Smith in the No. 16 HASA Pool Products/NAPA Filters Toyota as a pair of green-white-checkered attempts pushed the scheduled 50-lap race to 63 laps.
It was the second win of the season for Pursley, the series points leader, and the fourth in the last six NASCAR K&N Pro Series West events dating back to last year.
Eric Holmes (No.20 NAPA Toyota) seemed poised to collect his first road-course win, but the three-time series champion ran out of fuel on Lap 59 under caution after a stalled car forced a second attempt at a green-white-checkered finish. Last year, Pursley inherited the lead late in the race when the dominant car of Patrick Long cut a tire in the closing laps.
Holmes had passed Pursley on Lap 46 in Turn 10 of the 15-turn, 2.2-mile course and remained out front en route to the victory. Holmes had lost the lead to Pursley on a Lap-43 restart. A stalled car on the course brought out the caution just before the leaders took the white flag. The first green-white-checkered finish was then interrupted by a multi-car incident that resulted in two more cars stopped on the race track.
That appeared to set up a duel between Holmes and Pursley before Holmes ran out of gas and coasted to a stop in Turn 11.
Jim Inglebright (No. 1 ESEF Apparel Chevrolet) finished third, followed by Jonathon Gomez and David Mayhew. Luis Martinez Jr., Brian Wong, Salt Lake City’s Michael Self, Carl Harr and Greg Rayl rounded out the top 10.
In the SCCA Pro Racing Pirelli World Challenge Championships, Jason Daskalos, driving the No. 7 Dalsin Developments Dodge Viper, became the fourth consecutive Viper driver to win a World Challenge GT race at Miller Motorsports Park, following back-to-back wins by Tommy Archer in 2007 and 2008 and a win by Kuno Wittmer a season ago. Daskalos posted a 0.349-second victory over the No. 14 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 of James Sofronas, averaging 82.007 mph over the 23-lap, 70.104-mile race. Tony Gaples (No. 11 Kleinschmidt Racing Chevrolet Corvette) was third overall, followed by the Cadillac CTS-V.Rs of Johnny O’Connell and Andy Pilgrim.
Jordon Musser, making his first World Challenge race start, won the GTS class with a 15th-overall finish in his No. 05 Momentum Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro. Eric Foss was second in class and 16th overall in the No. 73 Traxxas Ford Mustang FR500S, with defending class champion Peter Cunningham taking third in class and 17th overall in his No. 1 RealTime Racing Acura TSX.
The Touring Car class win was claimed by Aaron Povoledo in the No. 88 K-Pax Racing Volvo C30, ahead of Ron Zitza (No. 60 Zitz Racing Volkswagen Jetta) and Tristan Herbert (No. 33 Brimtek Motorsports Volkswagen GTI).
Surviving the start was the key to victory in the first of two races for the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama, as Tim McKenzie and Madison Snow stayed out of trouble, avoiding the carnage from a three-car crash on the first corner of the first lap, to win wire-to-wire in their respective classes.
For McKenzie, driving the No. 92 Kelly Moss Motorsports entry in the Platinum class for 2009-2010 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars, winning Round 3 helped to erase the memories of Round 2 at Florida’s Sebring International Raceway, where he lead most of the race only to spin late in the event. Today was almost a repeat of that day, as McKenzie once again had a charging Henrique Cisneros (No. 26 NGT Motorsport) to contend with through the entire race.
Cisneros’ teammate, Carlos Kauffman (No. 24 NGT Motorsports), finished third ahead of Michael Schein (No. 21 Alex Job Racing) and Melanie Snow of Pleasant Grove (No. 56 Snow Racing).
Snow’s 15-year-old son Madison was victorious in the Gold Class for older Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars, becoming the youngest winner in the history of the series. Driving the No. 62 Snow Racing entry, he started from the pole and was just behind the first-corner crash. He finished in 10th position overall.
Eduardo Cisneros (No. 29 NGT Motorsports) wound up second in class in 15th overall, with Steve Goldman (No. 13 Competition Motorsports) completing the podium. Mitch Landry (No. 54 Wright Motorsports) and Glen Gatlin (No. 17 Topp Racing) filled out the top five.
In the first of two races for the Pirelli Drivers Cup USA, Doug Baron was the overall winner, leading Jim Walsh and Steven Streimer to the checkered flag. The Group B winner was David Cormier and Group C was won by Bryce Miller.
In qualifying for the SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Championship, defending race winner and series champion Tony Ave took the pole at 1:47.501 (102.072 mph) in the No. 1 Lamers Racing Chevrolet Corvette, establishing a new Trans-Am qualifying record for the 3.408-mile East Course at MMP. R.J. Lopez (No. 6 Disco 106/ECR Engines Corvette) qualified second, ahead of Simon Gregg (No. 59 Derhaag Motorsports Corvette).
Sunday’s schedule includes the second of two races for the Pirelli Drivers Cup at 10:45 a.m., followed by the final IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge race at 12:45 p.m. and the SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Championship race at 1:45 p.m.
There are many fun off-track activities for fans to enjoy, including MMP’s brand-new Zip Line, karting at the Miller Kart Center and off-road Jeep rides. The paddock is also open to fans, allowing up-close-and-personal access to all the teams and drivers.
