Ave, McKenzie, Snow continue winning ways
TOOELE VALLEY, UTAH (May 1, 2011) — It was a day for repeat winners at Miller Motorsports Park today as the Larry H. Miller Dealerships Utah Grand Prix came to a close.
Tony Ave dominated the competition in today’s SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Series race , starting from the pole in the No. 4 Lamers Racing Chevrolet Corvette and putting on a driving clinic, leading all but the first of 33 laps.
On the first lap heading into Turn One, rookie Carlos de Quesada slid his No. 22 Alegra Motorsports Jaguar XJR past Ave to take the early lead. De Quesada led the first lap before Ave regained the point on the next lap. Once Ave took the lead, he never looked back, winning by 16.957 seconds over Doug Harrington and capturing his first Trans-Am Series win of the season.
De Quesada was third under the checkered flag, but was disqualified by the Chief Steward of the race following post-race inspection. As a result, Simon Gregg’s No. 59 Derhaag Motorsports Chevrolet Corvette was credited with the final podium position. Teammates Cliff Ebben (No. 36 McMahon Group Ford Mustang) and Denny Lamers (No. 66 McMahon Group Ford Mustang) completed the top five.
Today’s win was Ave’s seventh-career Trans-Am victory, and propelled him to the lead in the championship.
In the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama, Tim McKenzie and 15-year-old Madison Snow of Pleasant Grove picked up their second wins in as many days. McKenzie, driving the No. 92 Kelly Moss Motorsports entry in the Platinum Class (for 2010-2011 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars), fell back from second on the grid to fifth on the first lap of the 24-lap race and worked his way back to the lead by Lap 16. Brian Wong (No. 23 Alex Job Racing) finished second ahead of Henrique Cisneros (No. .26 NGT Motorsports). David Hansson (No. 37 Porsche Napleton Racing) and Melanie Snow of Pleasant Grove (No. 56 Snow Racing) completed the top five.
Madison Snow, Melanie Snow’s son, claimed his second win of the weekend in the Gold Class (for older Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars) with a 18th-place overall finish in the No. 62 Snow Racing entry. After starting second in class, he had to battle past a Platinum Class car and then-Gold Class leader Eduardo Cisneros (No. 29 NGT Motorsports). Eduardo Cisneros finished in the runner-up position, with Glen Gatlin (No. 17 Topp Racing) claiming the final Gold Class podium position.
The multi-car accident at the start-finish line marred the beginning of Sunday’s second of two races on the weekend for the Pirelli Drivers Cup USA, eliminating many top contenders. Doug Baron wound up winning for the second time in two days, with Bill Earon finishing second. Madison Snow claiming third overall and first in Group B, capping off a remarkable weekend for the precocious Utah youngster who came up through the ranks in Miller Motorsports Park’s’ karting program.
Over the next two days, May 2-3, the AMA Pro Road Racing motorcycles will be conducting a test at Miller Motorsports Park in preparation for The BigM Weekend, to be held at MMP over Memorial Day weekend, May 29-31. The four AMA Pro Road Racing championships – American Superbike, Daytona SportBike, Supersport and the Vance and Hines XD1200 series – will share the bill with the Superbike World Championship for The BigM Weekend event. The AMA riders last competed at Miller Motorsports Park in 2008 and will be working to optimize their setups for the upcoming race.
The public is invited to attend the AMA test at no charge.
